Mark Twain said once that the two most important days in your life are the day you’re born and the day you realise why. We’ve been doing a bit of work on this and attempting to discover our why. We want to communicate it, in such a way that people will understand why we do the things we do.
The simple truth is that we love to find solutions for our customers when they have dilemmas over keeping their floors and furnishings clean. There are a million carpet cleaners, most of whom can clean a carpet. We want to be the problem solvers.
So, how do we do that? I’ve written before about the “Chem” in Chem-Dry and how it stands for chemistry (not chemical) because we take a scientific approach to floor and furniture cleaning. Understanding the science as to why certain fibres or fabrics respond in particular ways when exposed to spills and wear is key to problem solving.
I saw an advertisement for a product on Facebook which was being used as a remedy to pet urine in a carpet. The product was a spray on, agitate and wipe off type of arrangement. The demonstrator and the customer didn’t understand the science. The product in question removed the mark on the face of the carpet, which had been there for a month. Problem solved? Not quite.
Science tells us that urine when it dries crystalises. In a crystalised form it will not omit any odour which is detectable to humans (dogs will know exactly where it is). In a crystalised form it cannot be readily removed from the backing or the underlay of the carpet. When moisture is introduced, even in the form of some humid weather, the urine will off gas (or stink) which is why removing the urine crystals is key to finding the solution to pet urine in a carpet.
Understanding the science allows us to provide the solution. Chem-Dry Far North Coast has a proprietary product called PURT (pet urine removal treatment). PURT works to return the urine to a liquid form, which makes it possible to remove from the carpet. Removing the mark alone does not solve the problem or find the solution. Removing the source, removes the chance that future issues will occur.
There is a theory in carpet cleaning about a WATCH analogy. It is a combination of Water, Agitation, Time, Chemical and Heat which provides the best means of cleaning for particular carpets and particular cleaning issues. Our access to a range of different methods means that we are able to get the mix exactly right for whatever the situation. Again, understanding the science is key to all that we do.
